How It All Started

Minorities in Medicine (MM) began as a campus-based student organization in 2014, founded by Waverly Rose Brim at Western Connecticut State University. It earned early recognition, including the "Best New Organization" award at WCSU's Student Leadership Gala. Since then, MM has evolved into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a culturally competent medical workforce. Over the past decade, our organization has trained over 100 students in medical techniques, certified 60 in BLS/CPR, and provided Mental Health First Aid certification to 40 students. MM has facilitated paid internships at esteemed institutions, including Yale School of Medicine and UNC Chapel Hill, while alumni have advanced as nurses, physician assistants, dentists, and other healthcare professionals. By providing mentorship, scholarships, and fellowships, MM empowers underrepresented students and supports minority healthcare practitioners, shaping a more equitable and inclusive medical workforce.
